We are pleased to welcome you to the executive community through the New Executives Pathway – a tailored experience designed to support your transition and help you build a trusted network of peers.

Your journey begins with the New Executive Induction Forum hosted by APEX in partnership with the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS). This exclusive event is free of charge and kicks off a series of cohort-based sessions on leading as a new executive.

Karen Ellis is an engaging and inclusive senior leader with extensive public sector experience across 14 organizations, known for driving systems change, strengthening culture, and delivering results. She recently retired as Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Correctional Services and also served as Public Service Commissioner, providing strategic direction on HR and executive development. Before joining the OPS, she led a consulting practice focused on change leadership and executive advisory services. She previously had a 20-year federal career where she held multiple Assistant Deputy Minister roles and earned a reputation for strategic execution and strong people leadership.

She also undertook the critical role of Deputy Minister for the COVID-19 Response (Communications) at the Privy Council Office, navigating a particularly challenging period. Throughout her career, she has also contributed significantly to areas such as democratic reform, intergovernmental affairs, and machinery of government.

Grandmother Irene Compton

Irene Compton is co-founder of Minwaashin Lodge celebrating 30 years of work there. She is an inter-generational survivor of the residential school system. Her work at the lodge supports women survivors of lethal violence, assisting them with safety plans, stabilization, healing and employment & education achievement.

Irene is the Keeper of the stories at Minwaashin’s Sacred Lodge which connects Indigenous women to their culture, identity and pride.

Jean-François Fleury joined the Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer (OCHRO) at Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) in 2018, initially serving as the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Governance, Planning and Policy Sector. He was later appointed Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of Strategic Direction and Digital Solution Sector (SDDS). In this role, he has provided strategic leadership on improving HR and Pay, on publishing more disaggregated data to support our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and on modernizing our Public Service Employee Survey. He has also played a key role in shaping ‘Future of Work’ considerations for the federal public service and guided the establishment of the hybrid work model with our return to our physical workplaces following the pandemic.

Andre Loranger

Chief Statistician of Canada

André Loranger was appointed Chief Statistician of Canada in December 2024 after being in the position on an interim basis since April 2024. Mr. Loranger represents Statistics Canada on various international expert groups pertaining to statistics. He is currently the chair of the United Nations Conference of European Statisticians under the umbrella of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the co-chair of the United Nations Network of Economic Statisticians and the former chair of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting.

Andrew Brown

Associate Deputy Minister, Canadian Heritage

Andrew was appointed Associate Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage in May 2024. Prior to this appointment, he was an Associate Deputy Minister at Employment and Social Development (ESDC). Andrew contributed to Canada’s commitments on Early Learning and Child Care and to the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent, such as the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative. Since 2014, he held several senior positions at ESDC, where he worked on initiatives spanning its mandate.

Canadian Hockey Goalie, three-time Olympic medalist

Sami Jo Small is a 3x Olympian in the sport of Ice Hockey. She has won 2 gold and a silver as a goaltender representing Canada. A Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and a graduate of Stanford University in Mechanical Engineering, she has been a professional speaker for more than 25 years. She uses storytelling to exemplify many aspects of developing more successful teams and leave the audience with concrete ways to support the people and the teams around them through her message that, “In life, we don’t always get to choose the role we play, but we always get to choose how we play it. She also recently published her first book, a best-selling memoir, The Role I Played – Canada’s Greatest Olympic Hockey Team and launched her new Podcast, “Sami Jo’s Podcast” on the Sport Illustrated/Hockey News platform.
