Who am I becoming while I am busy doing?

This interactive workshop focuses on a critical mantra for senior leaders: “Who am I becoming while I am busy doing?” Participants will understand the importance of strengthening their leader character to amplify their effectiveness as a leader, while learning how to develop their character like a muscle, encompassing both personal and professional growth.

Join us for a 75-minute learning session and connect with Ivey Business School Professor Dusya Vera  who will introduce the leader character framework and discuss how a leader’s character impacts mental health, organizational culture, wellbeing, and other key areas, supported by empirical evidence.

Dusya Vera

Professor, Strategy and General Management

Dusya Vera is a Professor of Strategy and the Executive Director of the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership. She obtained her doctoral degree at Ivey in 2002.

Dusya’s expertise is in the areas of strategic leadership, leader character, improvisation, and organizational learning. She has published in top academic publications such as the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Annals, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, The Leadership Quarterly, Organization Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Management Learning, among others. She also enjoys writing practitioner-oriented articles, which have been published in journals such as Organizational Dynamics and Business Horizons.

She is currently an Associate Editor of Academy of Management Discoveries, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Journal of Business Research, and Management Learning. She is a member of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society.

Throughout her career, Dusya is an award-winning teacher, teaching courses at the undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and executive level in the areas of strategic management, strategic leadership, leader character, and ethical leadership, among others. She has extensive experience in Executive Development. She has also received multiple awards in the areas of research and service.

Prior to returning to the Ivey Business School in 2022, she was on the faculty of the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston in the Department of Management & Leadership for 20 years.

Cal Piché
Director, Governance and Planning, APEX

Over the course of his career, Cal Piché has held a variety of corporate, policy, and operational roles, and is currently the APEX Executive responsible for Governance and Board Planning.

Prior to joining APEX, Cal was a Director within the People Management Operation Branch of the Corporate Services Sector at IRCC where he provided effective oversight and strategic direction on IRCC’s overhaul of its executive onboarding program.

In other roles at IRCC, Cal has been the Departmental ATIP Coordinator; the interim Director General – Integrated Corporate Services and the acting Chief Privacy Officer; and Director of Parliamentary Affairs and Briefings where he provided strategic advice and recommendations on key departmental and ministerial priorities.

Prior to his tenure at IRCC, Cal held several roles at Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), including Chief of Staff to the Associate Deputy Minister; Chief of Operations for the Secretariat responsible for the Canada Post Corporation review (2016-2018); and Director of Business Management Services for the Science and Parliamentary Infrastructure Branch, where he oversaw IM/IT, safety & security, accommodations and procurement needs.

Cal has extensive experience in fostering partnerships with stakeholders and providing strategic advice to senior management, and Ministers, and their staff. He is committed to empowering employees and creating an environment where teams thrive in fast paced, politically sensitive settings. Known for his innovative thinking and strong communications skills, Cal consistently seeks creative solutions to enhance existing processes and achieve successful outcomes.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Ottawa and is a Certified Practitioner in Programme Management.
